Designing the Perfect Van Life Interior Layout

The interior layout of your van build can be designed in countless ways. If you’re new to van life, whether you’re building your own van like I did or buying one already converted, you’ll quickly find endless inspiration online.

But ultimately, your layout comes down to one thing: how you plan to live on the road.

What to Consider Before Choosing Your Layout

Before committing to a design, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • Are you traveling occasionally or living in your van full-time?

  • Are you traveling solo, with a partner, or with family?

  • Do you need a workspace for remote work or photo/video editing?

  • Are you a student working online?

  • Do you have pets traveling with you?

These questions help define your must-have features, whether you're buying a pre-built van or creating a custom DIY van conversion.

When I was initially searching for a pre-converted van, I focused on finding one that had most of what I needed—knowing I could customize it later. But once I decided to build my own, the design process became both the most exciting and most challenging part.

My Layout Planning Process

Like many van lifers, I went through multiple layout ideas during the brainstorming phase. I considered:

  • A dedicated workspace for editing and creative projects

  • A cozy, home-like interior

  • Maximizing storage for travel gear and photography equipment

  • Space for friends or family to visit

Originally, I planned for a workspace-focused layout, but quickly realized my mid-roof van wouldn’t allow for overhead storage without sacrificing comfort (aka hitting my head constantly).

That—and my oversized fridge—forced me to rethink everything.

Why I Chose a Fixed Bed Layout

At first, I was completely against a fixed bed design. I thought having a permanent bed would make the space feel less functional and less like a “home.”

But once I saw it come to life, everything changed.

The under-bed storage alone made it worth it. It gave me the space I needed for gear, clothing, and essentials—especially important for travel and photography on the road.

Now, I love having:

  • A fixed bed for comfort and convenience

  • Large storage space underneath

  • Additional overhead storage where possible

Designing Around Challenges

One of the biggest layout challenges was my large Dometic fridge/freezer. Because of its size, I couldn’t fit all my kitchen components on one side.

So I got creative.

I moved my sink near the sliding door, which not only solved the space issue but created one of my favorite features—a view while cooking with the door open.

Custom Features That Made It My Own

This is where your van truly becomes yours. I added a few personal touches that made a big difference:

  • Slide-out table in the back for meals, guests, or even quiet moments

  • Doggie ramp for my fur baby to safely enter and exit

  • Pocket door inspired by Divine on the Road for added privacy and safety

The pocket door, especially, helps separate the “living space” and makes van life feel more like a true home.

Final Thoughts on Van Interior Design

The beginning of your van build is easily the most exciting part—watching your vision come to life is incredibly rewarding.

That said, it’s also easy to get overwhelmed by all the ideas and layouts you’ll see online. My biggest advice?

Once you’re happy with your design—stick with it and stop looking.

There will always be new ideas and upgrades, but your van will evolve over time. What matters most is building a space that supports your lifestyle, creativity, and adventures on the road.
