Van Life in Alberta’s Badlands: Drumheller & Dinosaur Provincial Park Guide

Who doesn’t love desert vibes… especially when you can find them right here in Alberta?

If you’re craving a unique road trip that feels completely different from the typical mountain scenery, the Alberta Badlands should be at the top of your list. Two of the most iconic spots—Drumheller and Dinosaur Provincial Park—offer unreal landscapes, rich history, and some of the most unique views in Canada.

Although many people think they’re the same place, they’re actually about 1 hour and 45 minutes apart (164 km)—and both are 100% worth visiting.

I’ve explored both multiple times, and if you’re planning a van life trip or even just a weekend getaway, this guide will help you make the most of it.

Dinosaur Provincial Park: A UNESCO Gem in Alberta

Let’s start with one of the most unique places in the province.

Dinosaur Provincial Park isn’t just beautiful—it’s globally significant. The park is home to over 50 species of dinosaurs and more than 450 fossil discoveries, making it one of the richest fossil sites in the world. Because of this, it’s been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

But beyond the history, the real magic?

The landscape.

Rolling badlands, layered rock formations, winding trails, and wildlife make it feel like you’ve stepped into another world. It’s hard to believe you’re still in Alberta.

What to Do in Dinosaur Provincial Park

  • Explore the scenic hiking trails through the Badlands

  • Spot wildlife and unique desert-like terrain

  • Visit lookout points for panoramic views

  • Camp or stay overnight for sunrise and sunset views

This is one of those places where slowing down really pays off. Whether you’re hiking or just taking it all in, it’s an experience that sticks with you.

Drumheller: The Dinosaur Capital of the World

Now let’s talk about Drumheller—aka one of the coolest road trip destinations in Alberta.

The drive into Drumheller is something you won’t forget. One minute you’re cruising through prairies, and the next, the landscape completely drops into dramatic valleys and canyon-like formations.

It honestly feels like entering a different planet—and I’m obsessed with it.

Drumheller is known as the Dinosaur Capital of the World, and for good reason. It’s home to the incredible Royal Tyrrell Museum, which features the largest displays of dinosaur fossils in the world and is Canada’s only museum dedicated entirely to palaeontology.

Best Things to Do in Drumheller

If you’re planning a visit, here are some must-do experiences:

  • Hike the famous Hoodoos

  • Visit Horseshoe Canyon for epic views

  • Explore Horse Thief Canyon

  • Walk across the Star Mine Suspension Bridge

  • Visit the historic Atlas Coal Mine

  • Stop by the World’s Largest Dinosaur

  • Take a quick trip to the ghost town of Wayne

There’s honestly so much to do here—you could easily spend a full day (or more) exploring.

Why You Need to Experience the Alberta Badlands

The Alberta Badlands are one of the most underrated travel destinations in Canada.

Between the desert-like landscapes, rich dinosaur history, and endless places to explore, it’s the perfect mix of adventure and discovery—especially for van life travelers.

One of my favorite memories was taking my van out here (on a VERY windy day 😅), but the sunsets and sunrises made it completely worth it. There’s something about waking up in a place like this that just hits differently.

And I already know—I’ll be heading back again.

Final Thoughts: Plan Your Alberta Road Trip

If you’ve never been to Drumheller or Dinosaur Provincial Park, this is your sign to go.

Whether you’re planning a quick weekend trip or adding it to a longer van life journey, the Alberta Badlands will completely surprise you—in the best way.

Trust me… you won’t regret it.
