Welcoming Our Puppy to Van Life: Meet Oliver-Boots 🐾

Hello beautiful friends,

If you’ve been around for a while, you already know my main adventure buddy—Tucker Bear. But today, it’s time to officially introduce the newest (and tiniest) member of our van life crew…

Oliver-Boots 🐾 (yes, with the twisty tail).

How Oliver-Boots Joined Our Van Life Journey

For a long time, Steve and I had talked about getting another Dachshund.

But there was one big hesitation—I was living on the road.

If we got a puppy while I was still deep in van life, I worried I’d miss those early puppy months… the cutest, most important stage where they bond and grow. I also wanted our future pup to know me, not just meet me later.

So we decided:
I would experience van life fully with Tucker first… and we’d revisit the idea later.

Or so I thought.

The Day Everything Changed

On June 8, 2022, something told me to reach out to the same breeder we got Tucker from—just to see if they had any upcoming litters.

That same day, they had just welcomed a litter of long-haired dapple Dachshunds.

(If you know, you KNOW how rare that is.)

I sent it to Steve, and just like that… the conversation reopened.

But I was still hesitant.

Van life with two dogs? A puppy on the road? I wasn’t sure I was ready.

The Surprise I Never Saw Coming 💍

What I didn’t know?

Steve had already messaged the breeder.

He had already put down a deposit.

And our little male silver dapple would be ready to come home in August.

Fast forward to Halifax, Nova Scotia…

Steve came to visit me—and what turned into one of the most unforgettable days of my life included:

  • A proposal 💍

  • A beautiful ring

  • And a puppy we would name Oliver (aka Oliver-Boots)

Van Life With a Puppy: What It’s Really Like

Bringing a puppy into van life has been… an adjustment 😅

Tucker already knew both house life and van life—but Oliver?

This is all he knows.

And honestly, it’s pretty special to watch.

That said, having a four-month-old puppy on the road changes everything:

  • Our daily schedule now revolves around potty breaks and feeding times

  • Training happens in completely new environments

  • We’ve had to navigate unexpected challenges (like allergies and diet changes)

  • Routine and consistency became even more important

It’s been a shift—but a beautiful one.

Watching Tucker Become a Big Brother

At first, Tucker wasn’t totally sure about his new little brother.

But day by day, they’ve grown closer.

It’s been incredible watching their relationship develop—learning each other, playing, adjusting. They’re not quite best friends yet… but we’re getting there.

And honestly, it makes van life feel even more like home.

Why Oliver-Boots Is the Perfect Addition

I’ve always dreamed of having another Tucker… but in dapple form.

And Oliver?

He’s everything I hoped for.

  • A rare long-haired dapple

  • The most beautiful coloring

  • And a personality that fits perfectly into our lifestyle

He has seamlessly become part of our van life journey—and our family.

And when we eventually head back to Alberta for a while, I know he’ll settle into “home life” just as naturally.

Final Thoughts: Van Life With Dogs Just Got Better

Adding Oliver-Boots to our journey wasn’t something I fully planned…

But it turned out to be exactly what we needed.

Van life looks a little different now—more structure, more responsibility, more love.

And I wouldn’t change a thing.
