Tips for Van Life With Dogs 🐾
Traveling van life with dogs is one of the most rewarding experiences—but it definitely comes with its own learning curve, especially when you have more than one. If you’re thinking about life on the road with your pups, here are a few things I’ve learned along the way:
1. Create a Consistent Routine
Even though van life can feel unpredictable, dogs thrive on structure. Keeping feeding times, potty breaks, and bedtime consistent helps them feel safe and settled—no matter where you park for the night.
2. Plan for Regular Stops
Whether you have one dog or two, regular stops are key. It gives them time to stretch, explore, burn energy, and stay comfortable—especially on long driving days.
3. Prioritize Comfort & Safety in Your Van
Make sure each dog has their own designated space to relax, whether that’s a shared bed or separate areas. Safety while driving is also huge—think about how they’re secured and what setup keeps them calm and protected.
4. Be Prepared for Messes (It Will Happen 😅)
Mud, sand, shedding, water spills—you name it. Life on the road with dogs can get messy fast, so having towels, wipes, and cleaning supplies easily accessible is a must.
5. Stay Consistent With Training
New environments = new distractions. Van life is actually an amazing opportunity to reinforce training, boundaries, and socialization in real-world settings.
6. Be Flexible With Your Schedule
Your day won’t revolve just around you—it revolves around your dogs. Their needs, energy levels, and routines will shape your travel days more than you might expect.
7. Monitor Diet & Health on the Road
Travel can bring changes in routine, stress, and even allergies. Keep an eye on how your dogs are reacting to food, water, and new environments—and be ready to adapt when needed.
8. Find Dog-Friendly Stops & Adventures
One of the best parts of van life with dogs is exploring together. Look for dog-friendly trails, beaches, parks, and rest stops to make the experience enjoyable for everyone.
9. Be Patient—With Them and Yourself
Traveling with dogs isn’t always easy, especially in a small space. But the bond you build and the experiences you share make it more than worth it.
If I’m being honest… it can feel a little chaotic at times—especially with two dogs—but it’s also one of the most fulfilling parts of this lifestyle.
